About this trip

Gammara is a traditional wooden phinisi running 3 day 2 night Komodo open trips from Labuan Bajo. She was built in Tana Beru, the phinisi building village of South Sulawesi, in 2018 and 2019. Six cabins, every one with air conditioning and its own bathroom with hot and cold showers.

What sets Gammara apart from a typical open trip boat: the hull is ironwood, the interior is golden teak, and the boat makes its own fresh water. So shower water is not rationed during the trip.

What is the boat like?

The hull is 30 metres long plus a 7 metre bowsprit, 6 metres wide, and weighs 72 tons. The main engine is an 8 cylinder Mitsubishi, backed by two 6 cylinder Mitsubishi auxiliaries, for a cruising speed of 8 to 10 knots. Power comes from a 22 kVA Mitsubishi generator.

Fresh water is made on board: a water maker producing 4,000 litres every 8 hours, with a 4.5 ton tank. The fuel tank holds 5 tons, so the boat does not need frequent refuelling stops.

Navigation runs on radar, an echo sounder, GPS, VHF radio and a compass. The operator lists the safety gear by number: 2 life rafts for 15 people each, 8 lifebuoys, 36 life jackets, an oxygen tank, a first aid kit, and fire extinguishers in every cabin, the kitchen and the engine room.

A 7 metre speedboat with two 40 HP Yamaha engines takes you to the beaches.

What shared space is there?

Inside is a lounge and dining room with a long wooden table and windows onto the sea. Outside are an open-air dining table, a large sundeck with day beds and big cushions, and a shaded lounging area under the awning.

Other facilities: tea, coffee and drinking water all day, a stainless steel water bottle for every guest, snorkelling gear, a stand-up paddle board, floats, a sound system and WiFi. For children there are board games, cards, chess, watercolours and colouring books.

Which cabin suits you?

The Master Cabin is on the upper deck, 15 square metres including the bathroom. Wrap-around windows give a 180 degree view of the sea. It has a king bed for 2 people.

The Suite Cabin is also on the upper deck, 15 square metres, with a king bed, native hardwood walls and large side windows onto the sea.

The four Deluxe Cabins are on the lower deck, each 10 square metres including the bathroom, with built-in storage and wood panelled walls. You hear the waves as you fall asleep, and this is the most affordable choice on Gammara.

Every cabin gets bath and beach towels, shampoo and soap in refillable glass containers, and daily cleaning.

Who is it for?

If you are two and want the sea in view from your bed, pick the Master or Suite on the upper deck.

If you are travelling with a friend or partner and want to save, the lower deck Deluxe Cabins still have air conditioning and a private bathroom. Every cabin on this open trip is booked for a minimum of 2 people.

If your group is larger, Gammara can also be chartered as a private trip. Ask on WhatsApp for the price and dates.
